Gain the Policy Edge celebrates tenth birthday

11th December 2008

On Wednesday 3 December, Ms Thorn joined with over 50 past speakers and alumnists and 50 new program participants to celebrate this significant 10th anniversary milestone at a cocktail reception held at Old Treasury.

"For 10 years, the program has been the "rite of passage" for more than 700 policy makers from across government and the list of 130 speakers during the life of the program, is a veritable "who's who" of government. Some of those people are with us here tonight," Ms Thorn said.

"It is a tribute to the original conception and design of "Gain the Edge" that it has stood the test of time. Over the years, people with diverse experiences have worked together to explore how policy is made, presented and implemented".

In marking the occasion, Ms Thorn recognised the difficulties faced by policy makers over the past decade and the challenges that lie ahead, such as tackling climate change, social exclusion and the consequences of globalisation.

She also characterized the shortcomings and small pleasures of working in policy from a policy maker's point of view.

"Policy makers have to have a mindset that allows them to be "optimistic pessimists" - realists about the difficulty of their work and the social and political pressures that constrain what they do, yet idealists who have to believe that good policy will eventually have its day".

Co-author of Gain the Policy Edge and Managing Director of The Nous Group, Tim Orton facilitated further reflections on the role of policy makers by holding candid vox pops with past speakers and program alumnists.

Paul Myers, Director, Consumer Affairs and Jenny Samms, Executive Director, Department of Planning and Community Development were among the past speakers who looked back on the major policy issues they faced at the time of their involvement.
