About Gain the Policy Edge

Gain the Policy Edge is an innovative senior government program aimed at public sector professionals and managers who want to develop their policy leadership potential.

The course content reflects different perspectives on public sector thinking.

It challenges participants to develop fresh channels of thought, and to think about new and different approaches to public administration.

Previous participants say...

'The guest speakers were very interesting and offered fantastic insights into the policy making process. Also giving a presentation in the Assembly was an amazing opportunity'.

Stephen Parker, Legal Policy Officer, Criminal Law Policy, Department of Justice

'I enjoyed the variety of highly motivated, skilled and knowledgeable participants and presenters. Each participant and presenter had their own style and personality which contributed to the mix and variety of conversations throughout the course'.

Claire Sandford
Manager, Health Service Operations, Grampians Region, Department of Health.

'I liked the role plays and group work - even though challenging! Gain the Policy Edge provided a good opportunity to listen to high profile government figures (past & present)'.

Tracey Mander
Senior Project Officer, Victorian Cancer Agency.

'I liked the style of teaching. There was plenty of small group work and discussion with not too much lecturing. I also thought the guest speakers were great'.

Helen Matters
Senior Policy Advisor, Health and Wellbeing, Disability Services, Department of Human Services.

Participants will

Define how their work is likely to change over the
next five years

Examine the processes that successful policy
making should follow, including key elements
such as issue analysis, policy options, the budget
process, consultation and co-ordination

Look at community capacity and partnerships
and how these can multiply the options and
choices for governments

Explore two lynchpins of the policy development
process: cabinet decision making and
implementation in the public sector

Conclude by linking the policy development cycle
with evaluation and implementation

Participants will also have the opportunity to be assessed and accredited for their work during this intense program.
